Battleship

Overview & History

Released by Mindscape in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, *Battleship* adapted Milton Bradley’s classic pencil-and-paper guessing game into a military strategy title. Eschewing a traditional cinematic narrative, the game casts the player as a naval fleet commander tasked with outsmarting enemy admirals across increasingly difficult oceanic theatres. Unlike its purely static tabletop predecessor, this NES iteration injects arcade strategy by combining classic grid-based naval combat with tactical action sequences, resource management, and special weapon arsenals that simulate a high-stakes maritime war.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds in two distinct phases: tactical planning and real-time execution. In the traditional strategy mode, players deploy their fleet—comprising the Carrier, Battleship, Destroyer, Submarine, and Patrol Boat—across a coordinate grid before taking turns firing blind salvos at the enemy grid. However, the NES version introduces a groundbreaking action phase. When specific combat thresholds are met, players take direct control of a patrol boat or aircraft to actively destroy incoming enemy missiles, drop depth charges on hidden submarines, or engage enemy vessels in arcade-style mini-battles. Successful hits earn command points, which can be spent on radar sweeps, air strikes, and sonar pings to narrow down enemy vessel coordinates.
