Description

Big Nose Freaks Out is a platform game for the NES, produced by Codemasters and published by Camerica. The player controls a cave man character who has had all his bones stolen from a prehistoric bank by a dinosaur. Bignose sets off on an adventure through numerous prehistoric settings. Bignose defeats enemies using a club, however he also has access to a primitive skate board device (stone-boarding), via his invention – the wheel. The game is essentially a platform game in which the player collects bones and other items, while travelling from left to right until reaching the goal. B.N.F.O also had a two player mode and the addition of numerous secret levels and bonuses. Big Nose Freaks Out has become popular as more people have access to the ROM file through emulation websites.

Developed by Camerica and published by Codemasters in 1992, Big Nose Freaks Out is the quirky sequel to Big Nose the Caveman for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Utilizing Camerica's signature unlicenced gold cartridge format, the game continues the prehistoric adventures of Big Nose, a club-wielding Neanderthal. This time, the storyline shifts from mere survival to frantic pursuit when a sneaky pterodactyl steals Big Nose's prized invention—a flying machine—forcing our caveman hero to embark on a frantic, bone-collecting chase across prehistoric islands, icy tundras, and volcanic caverns to retrieve his stolen aviation prototype.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor's strictly linear stage design, Big Nose Freaks Out introduces a sprawling, map-based progression system filled with branching paths and hidden bonus stages. Big Nose wields his trusty wooden club to dispatch a bizarre menagerie of enemies, ranging from bouncing prehistoric bugs to stone-age machinery. The core gameplay revolves around collecting scattered "bones," which function simultaneously as score currency and in-game currency. Players can use these collected bones at the in-game shop between levels to purchase crucial upgrades, such as permanent weapon enhancements, extended health bars, and protective power-ups. The level design emphasizes vertical platforming, treacherous gap-jumps, and fast-paced momentum, requiring precise timing to avoid environmental hazards like bubbling lava pits and razor-sharp stalactites.
