Big Nose the Caveman

Overview & History

Developed by Codemasters and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, Big Nose the Caveman is a charming, fast-paced platformer steeped in prehistoric lore. The storyline follows Big Nose, a lovable Neanderthal whose pet pterodactyl is captured by a rival caveman named Terror-Terror after a theft of precious dinosaur bones. Spanning four distinct geographic regions—including Jungle Island, Terror Terror's Isle, and the icy wastes of Mount Bonestorm—the game was originally published via Codemasters’ unlicenced cartridge distribution model, later finding new life bundled into compilation cartridges. Its vibrant pastel graphics, bouncy chiptune soundtrack, and uniquely aggressive protagonist helped it stand out in a crowded 8-bit library during the twilight years of the NES hardware lifecycle.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers of the era where players jump on enemies, Big Nose relies primarily on his trusty bone-club projectile, which can be thrown infinitely straight ahead or arched upward. Defeated enemies leave behind 'bones', which function as both score items and currency used to purchase essential upgrades at in-game stores scattered throughout levels. Big Nose can acquire useful items like wings for temporary flight, sneakers for increased run speed, and upgraded club power-ups. The level design emphasizes verticality, momentum, and hazardous platforming over sprawling exploration, forcing players to master the timing of moving platforms, treacherous pit traps, and relentless waves of prehistoric beasts like saber-toothed cats, cave-bears, and flying reptiles before the level timer expires.
