Description

Magic Dragon is an unlicensed game for the Famicom/NES that was built using the framework of R-Type. R-Type, notably, was never released on either system.

The publisher (Magic) and developer (Magicseries Corp.), likely the same entity in reality, released this game in mainland China sometime during 1994. The graphical elements are clearly poor quality edits or copies of those used in R-Type. The game itself is prone to considerable glitching, especially in the HUD area at the top of the screen. It is consistently distorted, and rarely appears clearly during gameplay, likely due to the number of sprites on screen.

Besides these issues, the game is simply a watered down sidescrolling shooter, a clone of R-Type in almost all regards, but with less stages included. Some report that the physical cartridge contains the same artwork of Gradius III.

Overview & History

Released during the vibrant era of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Magic Dragon is a lesser-known side-scrolling action title developed by Sachen in 1990. Initially hitting Asian markets as an unlicensed cart, the game offers a distinct mythological aesthetic rarely seen in standard western platformers. The storyline casts players as a benevolent celestial dragon tasked with reclaiming stolen magical artifacts from a pantheon of corrupted elemental lords who have plunged the ancient world into perpetual twilight. Through a sequence of increasingly hostile environments—ranging from the smoldering peaks of the Obsidian Volcano to the abyssal depths of the Abyssal Tides—the narrative unfolds through cryptic lore blurbs before stage bosses, urging the player onward to restore universal balance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard brawlers or platformers of its time, Magic Dragon integrates vertical flight mechanics with classic ground-based movement. Players transition fluidly between a humanoid spellcaster form and a majestic serpentine dragon. Character moves include a rapid claw swipe for close-quarters combat, a charged fireball projectile capable of piercing multiple enemies, and a temporary invulnerability dash that consumes stored spirit gauges. The game introduces dynamic weather hazards, such as sudden gusts of wind that alter jump trajectories and lightning strikes that electrify platforms. Resource management is crucial, as players must collect glowing orbs left behind by defeated yokai to maintain their dragon transformation and unleash screen-clearing elemental spells.
