Not interested in bullet hell shooters or top down action games, then how about this cool little homebrew called ‘ Super Homebrew War ‘, which is a brand new entry for the NESDev 2018 competition. Unlike the other games we’ve mentioned this one features up to 4 player combative fun as characters from other homebrew games battle it out to see who’s the top fighter! Not only can you fight on 8 different homebrew inspired arenas, but the game has Mario style controls, you can jump on each others heads to kill or get new items from blocks, there’s multiple items to collection giving different abilities, different game modes such as most kills, AND you can fight CPU players if you don’t have three other friends.

Released as a vibrant 8-bit crossover love letter to the modern NES indie development scene, Super Homebrew War unites iconic characters from various independent Nintendo Entertainment System homebrew titles into a single frantic platforming arena. Developed collaboratively by retro enthusiasts, this title bridges the gap between classic 1980s hardware limitations and contemporary level design sensibilities. The storyline is delightfully meta: an evil glitch entity known as the Null-Byte has invaded the Homebrew Dimension, kidnapping the developers and threatening to wipe all unreleased cartridges from existence. To save their worlds, heroes from disparate homebrew universes must temporarily set aside their differences, traverse chaotic pixelated realms, and defeat corrupted digital bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Super Homebrew War combines fast-paced platforming action with tight combat mechanics reminiscent of classic crossover fighters, adapted for the NES's restricted color palettes and sprite limits. Players can select from a diverse roster of homebrew icons, each equipped with distinct physics, jump heights, and signature moves. For instance, melee-heavy brawlers utilize short-range sword slashes and downward thrusts, while ranged characters deploy projectile magic or explosive gadgets that consume a localized stamina meter. The game features multiple modes, including a cooperative story campaign and a chaotic versus mode supporting intense multi-character screen skirmishes.
