Description

BreakThru is a 2D side-scrolling vehicle shooter. Your mission: race, jump, and blast your way through five levels (mountains, bridge, plains, city, and airfield) of enemy defenses to recapture the stolen jet fighter. A host of enemy soldiers, mines, vehicles, and aircraft will try to stop you, though. Oh yeah… and don’t forget to watch out for those rocket attacks and falling rocks!

BreakThru

Overview & History

Released by Data East for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, following its 1986 arcade debut, BreakThru drops players into a tense, post-apocalyptic cold war setting. You pilot the specialized, heavily armed all-terrain vehicle known as the 'BreakThru' fighter, tasked with crossing hostile territory to retrieve a stolen prototype jet from heavily fortified enemy forces. Unlike standard side-scrollers, the game's narrative urgency is driven by a relentless cross-country gauntlet spanning five distinct environmental zones, ranging from rocky wasthlands and treacherous bridges to heavily guarded military installations, testing your reflexes against relentless vehicular and infantry assaults.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay uniquely blends high-speed vehicular platforming with intense vehicular combat. The core mechanic revolves around constantly accelerating forward while managing verticality. Your vehicle can jump over gaps, enemy mines, and incoming fire, as well as flip upside down when traversing specific magnetic ceiling sections—a brilliant twist that fundamentally alters how you dodge projectiles and navigate labyrinthine obstacles. Throughout the stages, you collect weapon upgrades that transform your standard forward-firing cannon into wide-spread lasers or powerful aerial-bombardment mortars. The terrain itself acts as an active hazard; crumbling bridges and dead ends demand split-second reaction times. If you take too much damage or miss a jump into an abyss, you lose a life, making resource management and precise jump-timing essential for survival against the unforgiving boss encounters at the end of each sector.
