Castle of Deceit

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by American Video Entertainment, Castle of Deceit is an obscure, unlicensed platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. AVE capitalized on the booming uncertified NES software market, crafting a dark fantasy adventure starring a valiant knight on a perilous rescue mission. The evil wizard Belzebu has kidnapped Princess Sarah and imprisoned her deep within his treacherous labyrinth. Because it bypassed Nintendo's official 10NES lockout chip, the cartridge required players to insert it into a hardware passthrough device, adding an extra layer of underground notoriety to its already bizarre legacy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate five distinct, trap-laden stages inside the fortress, battling hordes of ghouls, skeletons, and floating spirits. The knight relies on a trusty sword to slash approaching foes, alongside a limited supply of projectile daggers for ranged combat. Platforming precision is paramount, requiring carefully timed leaps across collapsing bridges, moving platforms, and bottomless pits. Hidden items and health restoration potions are scattered throughout destructible walls, demanding thorough exploration. The game is notoriously difficult due to stiff jumping physics, relentless enemy respawn rates, and punishing boss encounters at the end of each zone.
