City Connection

Overview & History

Developed and published by Jaleco, City Connection made its debut as an arcade cabinet in 1985 before roaring onto the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. The storyline stars a plucky, music-loving young woman named Clarice, who embarks on a whimsical, unauthorized joyride across the globe simply to paint every single street in major metropolitan areas bright white. Frustrated by a series of mundane driving tests, Clarice steals her favorite red hatchback and takes her rebellious road trip international, touring iconic locations such as New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo. Standing between her and her compulsive graffiti goals are waves of obstructive police cars, flying cats, and menacing hazards that she must outmaneuver while leaving a spotless trail of whitewashed asphalt in her wake.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, City Connection is a single-screen, platforming-puzzle arcade game viewed from a side-scrolling perspective. The objective across each of the game's twelve looping stages is to drive over every horizontal platform segment until it flashes white. Clarice's car is equipped with a horn that shoots magical tire spikes, which can be deployed to stun pursuing police vehicles or clear path obstructions. Players must meticulously navigate multi-tiered scaffolding, utilizing jump mechanics to leap between platforms while carefully managing momentum, as the car slides slightly when turning. Collecting scattered gas cans prevents running out of fuel, while gathering triangular flag icons allows Clarice to warp across the globe. Hitting enemy vehicles causes a life loss, adding intense arcade pressure to what initially appears to be a brightly colored, charming driving excursion.
