Overview & History

Developed by Mindscape and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1992, Conan: The Mysteries of Time (often simply known as Conan) tasks players with guiding the legendary Cimmerian barbarian through a treacherous, time-bending quest. Unlike typical movie tie-ins, this title presents an original storyline where Conan must traverse different historical eras to recover shattered pieces of a magical amulet and defeat the evil sorcerer Yara across ancient ruins, medieval castles, and futuristic landscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Conan combines side-scrolling platforming with hack-and-slash action. Players must navigate perilous environments filled with bottomless pits, moving platforms, and relentless traps. Combat is central to survival; Conan wields his signature broadsword, capable of executing sweeping horizontal slashes, upward thrusts to deal with flying adversaries, and crouched attacks to hit low-lying monsters like giant spiders and skeleton warriors. Throughout the stages, players collect power-ups, health-restoring jewels, and elemental magic scrolls that unleash screen-clearing devastating attacks against bosses such as mutant beasts and dark wizards. Precision jumping and timing enemy strikes are essential, as Conan's health pool is unforgiving and enemies respawn rapidly.
