Description

The Mutech Corporation has created their Gamma Base on what used to be Alcatraz Island. Their attempts at creating computer intelligence has backfired, as the AI they’ve created has taken over the computer systems and is threatening the world! Deep in the fortress is a gamma bomb, and your goal is to penetrate the fortress to destroy the bomb before it can be used. But be careful, for many Deathbots are guarding the maze-like passageways leading to the bomb!

Gameplay is from an overhead point of view; you’ll need to find your way through the various passageways to reach the gamma bomb (located on the 8th level) and diffuse it. In addition to doorways and walls, transporters can also be found in the maze. These will instantly teleport you to a new location, and on many levels you will need to figure how to use them correctly to get past otherwise dead ends. Different types of Deathbots guard the passages; and you’ll need to use the various weapons you find lying about to get past them, before they destroy you. You have a limited amount of energy. Each time you are hit by enemy fire or by a Deathbot, your energy depletes. Lose all of of your energy and a life is lost. And of course, each level ends with a large boss Deathbot. Good luck on your mission!

Deathbots

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by Color Dreams, *Deathbots* is a rare and infamous top-down sci-fi action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed during the era of unlicenced NES publishing, the game drops players into a grim, dystopian future where a rogue artificial intelligence has taken over a massive industrial complex. You control a heavily armed operative tasked with infiltrating the hazardous facility, dodging lethal traps, and obliterating hordes of mechanized foes to shut down the central mainframe. Though it flew under the radar upon its initial release due to its niche status and fierce difficulty, *Deathbots* has since gained a cult following among retro collectors for its bleak atmosphere and distinct visual style.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling platformers of the 8-bit era, *Deathbots* utilizes a restrictive, grid-based top-down perspective that emphasizes claustrophobic navigation and tactical shooting. Players must carefully traverse labyrinthine corridors filled with conveyor belts, electrified barriers, and patrolling security units. Your character is equipped with a standard projectile blaster capable of firing in multiple cardinal directions, essential for keeping fast-moving enemy androids at bay. As you progress deeper into the sprawling facility, you must collect keycards to unlock sealed blast doors while carefully managing your dwindling health bar. The game's unforgiving difficulty stems from relentless enemy respawns and tight corridors that demand precise positioning and split-second reflexes to survive the automated onslaught.
