Released by Rare in 1988 and published by GameTek, Double Dare successfully translated the iconic, messy Nickelodeon game show onto the Nintendo Entertainment System. While the NES didn't feature actual whipped cream or green slime, it captured the chaotic, trivia-based energy of Marc Summers' television masterpiece. Players guide contestants through a virtual studio set, racing against the clock to answer pop-culture questions, execute wacky physical challenges, and conquer the legendary obstacle course for the grand prize.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game closely mirrors the television format across three distinct rounds. In Round 1, players answer multiple-choice trivia questions to build up a cash bank, with the option to "Double Dare" their opponents to answer harder questions for twice the stakes. Round 2 escalates the competition with Physical Challenges, where players rapidly mash buttons to complete absurd tasks like tossing burgers or catching pies. The climax of the game is the Obstacle Course. Here, players must navigate a side-scrolling platformer sequence featuring iconic obstacles like the Sundae Slide, the One-Ton Human Hamster Wheel, and the iconic Nose, all while avoiding obstacles and chasing a strict countdown timer to grab the final flag.
