He was a legendary warrior of Aliahan, who suffered death at the hands of a fiendish monster. “If not stopped, the Archfiend Baramos will certainly destroy our world”, the King says. Your challenge, your destiny – the Destruction of Baramos. With three allies of your choosing, you are set to embark on your quest to save the world from Baramos…your final enemy?

Overview & History

Released by Enix in 1988 for the Famicom and brought to the NES in North America in 1992, Dragon Warrior III (Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation) serves as a monumental narrative prequel to the original two adventures. The sweeping storyline centers on the child of the legendary hero Ortega, who on their sixteenth birthday is summoned by the King of Aliahan to vanquish the archfiend Baramos before he plunges the world into eternal darkness. Unlike its linear predecessors, this installment introduces a groundbreaking prologue and a massive, globe-trotting overworld modeled after real-world geography, complete with a dynamic day-night cycle that alters town conditions and monster encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Dragon Warrior III revolutionized role-playing games by introducing the iconic Party System and the innovative 'Kanzen' (Personality) character creation mechanic at Patty's Party Planning Place. Players assemble a custom squad of up to four adventurers by choosing from versatile vocations—including the steadfast Hero, resilient Warrior, nimble Pilgrim, spellcasting Wizard, and adaptable Merchant or Sage. Combat remains traditional first-person turn-based skirmishes, executed via a text-based menu system where players issue specific commands like Fight, Spell, Run, or Use Item. Experience points gained from battles elevate character levels, granting access to devastating spells such as Healmore and Firebal, while strategic equipment management dictates defense and attack ratings against wandering beasts.
