Cliffhanger

Overview & History

Released by Sony Imagesoft in 1994, Cliffhanger for the Nintendo Entertainment System translates the Sylvester Stallone action-thriller into an 8-bit side-scrolling beat-'em-up. Coming late in the NES lifecycle, the game adapts the film's tense plot, casting players as rugged mountaineer Gabe Walker. Gabe must navigate the perilous peaks of the Rocky Mountains and evade ruthless mercenaries led by Eric Qualen, who have scattered millions of dollars in stolen Treasury loot across the freezing wilderness. Battling both the brutal elements and heavily armed outlaws, Gabe relies on his wits and combat training to rescue his surviving friends and thwart the criminal heist.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game combines traditional arcade-style brawler action with platforming segments unique to the alpine setting. Players guide Gabe through diverse stages, ranging from snow-swept forest trails and cavernous ice caves to precarious cliff ledges. Gabe possesses a versatile moveset adapted for high-altitude survival: he can throw punches and kicks, execute a sliding tackle to knock down rushing enemies, and perform vertical leaps across bottomless chasms. True to the source material, mountain-climbing segments require precise timing to scale sheer rock faces using ice axes while avoiding falling debris and enemy snipers. Health-restoring items and situational weapons like rocks and pipes can be picked up along the way to even the odds against Qualen's syndicate.
