Description

Through three action-packed missions, you must move out on foot or in slug vehicles across rugged terrain and underwater bases. Your objective is to rescue hostages by destroying enemies and solving strategic puzzles.

An unauthorized adaption of Metal Slug Advance for the Game Boy Advance. The player must reach the end of the stage while saving tied-up men and shooting enemies. The player character appears to be Marco Rossi from the original Metal Slug game, rather than the characters from Metal Slug Advance (Walter Ryan and Tyra Elson). The level layouts loosely mimic the original GBA game, though the game plays much slower in comparison; there are only three levels total. Originally commissioned exclusively for the Family Karaoto system.

Metal Slug

Overview & History

Released initially as an unofficial port of SNK’s legendary run-and-gun arcade masterpiece, the NES adaptation of Metal Slug captures the frantic spirit of the 1996 Neo Geo classic despite the hardware's 8-bit limitations. Developed long after the NES's commercial prime by dedicated homebrew programmers, this demake shrinks the sprawling military-vs-mutant campaign into a surprisingly competent cartridge. Players step into the combat boots of Marco Rossi, leader of the Peregrine Falcon Strike Force, tasked with overthrowing the tyrannical General Donald Morden and his Rebel Army before they unleash a global coup. Eschewing the complex sprite scaling of the original, this version ingeniously redigns pixel art to fit the PPU constraints of the NES, offering a gritty, nostalgic battlefield adventure complete with captive POWs waiting to hand out heavy weaponry.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop centers on relentless horizontal progression, dodging enemy bullet hell, and liberating captured prisoners of war for point bonuses and weapon upgrades like the Heavy Machine Gun and Flame Shot. True to the franchise's pedigree, players can occasionally commandeer the titular SV-001 "Metal Slug" tank, granting massive defensive armor and a devastating cannon blast at the cost of limited mobility. The controls utilize the NES standard effectively: the D-Pad handles movement and crouching, while dedicated buttons map to firing the standard-issue pistol, jumping over obstacles, and tossing hand grenades that clear out clustered infantry. Despite frame-rate drops during chaotic screen-clearing explosions, the game retains the punishing one-hit-kill arcade difficulty, requiring precise timing and quick reflexes to survive multi-tiered boss encounters.
