Developed as an unauthorized homebrew title late in the NES life cycle, *Beerslinger* merges classic Wild West tropes with fast-paced tavern brawling. Released independently on physical cartridges in 2018, this 8-bit hidden gem channels the chaotic energy of arcade classics like *Tapper* combined with side-scrolling beat 'em ups. You play as Bart, a retired federal marshal turned saloon keeper in the lawless dust-town of Rattlesnake Ridge. When the notorious Copperhead Gang rides into town, kidnaps the local mayor, and steals the legendary Golden Keg, Bart dusts off his trusty double-action revolvers and trades his apron for a six-shooter. The game's vibrant pixel art and chiptune ragtime soundtrack capture a gritty, comedic frontier aesthetic that pushes the NES PPU chip to its absolute limits with multi-layered parallax scrolling and remarkably smooth sprite scaling.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear brawlers, *Beerslinger* introduces a dual-phase gameplay loop across its six distinct stages. In the first phase of each level, players engage in a frantic, single-screen mini-game where Bart must slide frothy mugs of sarsaparilla and pale ale down slippery wooden bars to pacify rowdy patrons before they whip out their pistols. Succeeding builds up the "Liquid Courage" meter. Once the bar is cleared, the perspective shifts into a side-scrolling action platformer. Here, Bart utilizes a versatile move set: firing standard ricochet bullets, executing a corkscrew dodge-roll to evade dynamites, and unleashing the devastating "Draft Tornado" area-of-effect attack when his meter maxes out. Boss encounters, such as the duel against mechanical-arm-wielding Blackjack Burke, require precise timing to shoot falling debris while dodging high-velocity lead.
