Description

Hidden in the outskirts of the Dezone, a secret bio-weapons lab is conducting unspeakable experiments on the homeless youth of that concrete wasteland. The most promising test subject, codenamed PROJECT BLUE, manages to break free following an overly successful bio-energy augmentation. Now it’s up to YOU to help Blue escape from Theta Lab and bring down the shadowy multinational conglomerate running Neo Hong Kong! Put your skill, wits and reflexes to the test as you jump, swim, and blast your way through four massive areas in this exciting new action platformer.

Project Blue

Overview & History

Developed by overhead-action enthusiast Kevin Regamey and published by Brokeii, Project Blue is a phenomenal, late-release homebrew platformer designed specifically for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Originally conceptualized in the early 2000s and finally brought to physical and digital cartridges in 2020, this title captures the absolute pinnacle of 8-bit aesthetic and chiptune mastery. The storyline thrusts players into a dystopian, heavily industrialized future where a lone, nimble cyborg is activated to dismantle a rogue corporate supercomputer that has hijacked humanity's planetary defense grid. Eschewing the sluggishness of many modern retro-styled games, Project Blue boasts lightning-fast momentum, buttery-smooth screen scrolling, and punishing, single-hit-death mechanics reminiscent of Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Navigating through seven labyrinthine, neon-soaked industrial zones requires absolute precision. Unlike standard shooters, your protagonist relies heavily on a dynamic directional whip-hook attack that doubles as both an offensive weapon against swarming security drones and a grappling tether to swing across bottomless chasms. Players must master aerial momentum, wall-sliding, and split-second timing to overcome deviously placed turret fire and moving laser grids. Each stage culminates in a multi-phased boss encounter that tests your pattern recognition and reflex speed, all set to an incredible, pulse-pounding electronic soundtrack composed by Shiru that pushes the Ricoh 2A03 sound chip to its absolute limits.
