Scrooge McDuck is hot on the trail of the richest adventure ever. Pieces to the map of the Lost Treasure of McDuck have been scattered across the globe, and Scrooge must find them before the greedy Flintheart Glomgold grabs them. It’s going to be a race to the finish as both of them try to find the treasure and become the richest duck in the world! Join Scrooge and his nephews as they explore the ancient pyramids of Egypt and do battle with swash-buckling pirates in the Bermuda Triangle. Help them search the haunted halls of an ancient Scottish castle and scale the watery heights of Niagara Falls. Aid Scrooge in his quest for the secret of the island of Mu and you’ll gain the final clue to unravel the hidden location of the Lost Treasure of McDuck!

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, DuckTales 2 arrived late in the console's lifecycle when 16-bit systems were already dominating the market. Despite the shifting hardware landscape, Capcom pushed the aging 8-bit architecture to its absolute limits. The storyline kicks off when Scrooge McDuck discovers a torn map piece left behind by his grandfather, Fergus McDuck. This fragment points the way to a hidden family treasure, but Scrooge’s greedy rival, Flintheart Glomgold, learns of the quest and dispatches the Beagle Boys to intercept the remaining map pieces. Scrooge must traverse five exotic global stages—ranging from a pirate-infested ship and a frozen Niagara Falls to the ruins of Mu and a futuristic energy plant—to reunite the map and claim his ancestral fortune.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Building upon the phenomenal foundation of its 1989 predecessor, DuckTales 2 introduces several clever quality-of-life enhancements and mechanical depth. Scrooge retains his iconic cane-pogo move, executed by pressing Down while jumping, which allows him to bounce safely across hazardous spikes and defeat enemies. However, this sequel adds a contextual grip mechanic: pressing the B-button while near specific objects lets Scrooge hook items, pull levers, or hurl heavy blocks at enemies. Furthermore, Scrooge can now upgrade his cane at Gyro Gearloose’s workshop using cash collected throughout the levels, unlocking the ability to smash iron blocks or unearth hidden treasures. The stage selection is non-linear, and finding the hidden pieces of Gyro’s broken appliance across the levels unlocks a secret sixth stage and the true ending. The vibrant pixel art, fluid sprite animations, and an incredible soundtrack by Miki Higashino cement this title as an 8-bit masterpiece.
