Hungry and relaxed, Joe returns to the village… BUT WAIT! Where are all the cavewomen? And where is all the food? That bogus bunch of Neanderthal nerds must have kidnapped the cavewomen and eaten the food! Joe & Mac

Overview & History

Originally a vibrant coin-op arcade sensation by Data East, Joe & Mac (often subtitled Caveman Ninja) stomped its way onto the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992 via Ocean Software. The game drops players into a whimsical prehistoric era following the titular green-haired Joe and blue-haired Mac. Their peaceful tribal existence is shattered when a rival clan of Neanderthals raids their village and kidnaps all the local cavewomen. Brandishing stone-age weaponry, the dynamic duo embarks on a side-scrolling rescue mission across volcanic wastes, dense jungles, and prehistoric glaciers, battling bizarre dinosaurs, giant insects, and rival brutes before facing colossal prehistoric bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the arcade original's multi-directional progression and stamina system, the NES port features a modified stage-select map and a traditional health meter represented by a heart gauge. Players tackle level stages populated by prehistoric hazards and enemies. Joe and Mac wield an arsenal of upgradeable weapons, ranging from standard clubs and stone to boomerangs, fireballs, and flint axes. Holding down the attack button charges up a powerful 'mega-attack' that launches the cavemen spinning across the screen like buzzsaw dynamos. Additionally, players must manage a health-draining countdown timer, which drops faster if players stand still, heavily incentivizing aggressive, forward momentum. The game also incorporates vertical platforming sections, riding on the backs of Pterodactyls, and eating cave-food to recover lost health.
