Kung Fu

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1985 for the Famicom and subsequently the NES, Kung Fu is a seminal side-scrolling beat-'em-up that pioneered the genre. Loosely based on the martial arts classic Wheels on Meals starring Jackie Chan, the game follows the heroic Thomas, a master martial artist on a perilous mission inside the infamous "Devil's Temple." His ultimate goal is to rescue the kidnapped Princess Sylvia from the clutches of the evil ruler, Mr. X. Across five distinct, trap-filled floors of the pagoda, Thomas must battle waves of formidable thugs, knife-throwers, and towering boss opponents using only his bare hands and feet.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay loop is deceptively simple yet punishingly demanding, requiring precise timing and lightning-fast reflexes. Thomas traverses each single-screen stage from left to right, fending off continuous assaults from standard Grippers who attempt to grab and drain his vitality, low-crawling Confidants, and boomerang-tossing Toms. To survive, players must master Thomas's versatile combat repertoire: high and low punches, high and low kicks, and a dynamic jumping attack capable of clearing obstacles and striking airborne enemies. Each floor culminates in a unique boss encounter, ranging from the staff-wielding Bo Fighter and the giant chain-swinging Rean to the shape-shifting wizard Mr. X himself. Time is constantly ticking down, adding frantic urgency as Thomas loses health if the timer expires before clearing the stage.
