Paperboy 2

Overview & History

Released by Mindscape in 1992 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Paperboy 2 is the direct sequel to Atari's iconic arcade classic. Building upon the original formula, this iteration expands the suburban chaos by introducing a mirror-image neighborhood layout, a choice of gender for the protagonist (Paperboy or Papergirl), and an expanded delivery route that includes dangerous alleyways and perilous main streets. Unlike the arcade original, the NES port adds cooperative and competitive two-player modes, allowing siblings to divvy up suburban streets. The storyline remains delightfully mundane yet perilous: survive a week of paper deliveries while avoiding obstacles, pacifying angry pedestrians, and trying not to miss a single subscriber's doorstep, all while contending with the chaotic hazards of the American suburb.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Paperboy 2 shifts the perspective into an isometric scrolling view where your bicycle moves continuously forward at varying speeds. Players must meticulously time their throws to land rolled-up newspapers squarely into mailboxes, open doorways, or designated subscriber bins to earn points. Miss too many subscribers, and you lose your loyal customer base. The NES version introduces new interactive environmental hazards, including skateboarders, runaway baby carriages, stray dogs, and rogue construction workers. Defensive driving is essential; crashing into curbs, cars, or fences immediately costs one of your limited lives. Beyond the standard delivery route, players can test their skills in the training course bonus stages, dodging pylons and leaping over water hazards to rack up high scores before the grueling week concludes.
