Description

Two different versions were released for the Famicom/NES. The Japanese version was released in 1987, developed and published by Sunsoft. The American unlicensed version was released in 1989, developed and published by Tengen.

In the space year 1422, the Fantasy Zone was cast in panic at the collapse of the interplanetary monetary system. The Space Guild brings to light the plans of the planet Menon, whose forces are stealing the other planets’ currencies to fund a huge fortress in the Fantasy Zone. Opa-Opa is sent to stop the invading army and discover who is behind it. In the end, it turns out that the leader was none other than Opa-Opa’s long lost father, a revelation that leaves Opa-Opa with mixed emotions.

Fantasy Zone (Sunsoft)

Overview & History

Released in 1987, Sunsoft’s conversion of SEGA’s iconic arcade shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System brought the pastel-drenched, surreal world of OPA-OPA to home consoles. While ported to various systems, Sunsoft’s NES iteration is celebrated for its distinct graphical charm and unique audio arrangements. The storyline follows the sentient, winged spaceship Opa-Opa as he battles to save the whimsical Fantasy Zone from the nefarious Dark Menon forces, who have corrupted the planetary system by seizing control of its core bases.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional linear side-scrollers, Fantasy Zone operates on a looping, bi-directional plane where players can fly both left and right to clear a stage. The primary objective is to destroy all floating enemy generators (bases) while dodging waves of eccentric, colorful foes like floating balloons, mechanical fish, and abstract geometric hazards. Defeating standard enemies yields gold coins, which are the lifeblood of Opa-Opa’s progression. Periodically, a balloon shop spawns, allowing players to purchase crucial upgrades such as twin fire, heavy bombs, speed boosts, and temporary shields. Each zone culminates in a frantic boss battle against bizarre, multi-stage mechanical monstrosities, requiring precise dodging and sustained firepower. If Opa-Opa is destroyed, he resurrects with standard gear, but the escalating coin costs for repurchase demand careful financial and tactical management throughout the game's colorful planetary excursions.
