Description
Flying Warriors is a combination between the Japanese exclusive games Hiryū no Ken II: Dragon no Tsubasa and Hiryū no Ken III: Go-nin no Dragon.
The game is about a team of superheroes called the Flying Warriors who have to fight a demon before he can take over the world with his armies of Tusk Soldiers. You start off with kung fu master Rick Stalker, but eventually get the help of Hayato Go, Mary Lynn, Greg Cummings and Jimmy Cutler. During the side scrolling portion of the game you can use your kung fu and mystic spells to dispose of enemies. Each enemy you defeat gives you experience points which will eventually increase your life points. There are some one on one duels during fighting tournaments that involve hitting a target on your opponents body while defending the target on your own body. There is also RPG-style command battles against bosses.
There is also a tournament mode, where up to 8 players can compete to win the championship. You can choose your characters fighting style from six different choices; kung fu, boxing, karate, wrestling, kick boxing, and martial arts.
Flying Warriors
Overview & History
Released by Culture Brain in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Flying Warriors is a fascinatingly eclectic action-RPG that acts as the localization of the Japanese Famicom title Hiryu no Ken III: 5 Nin no Senshi. While it serves as the third entry in the Flying Warriors franchise, it was the first time North American players were introduced to the soaring martial artist Rick and his universe. The game is particularly unique for its split narrative, where Rick must gather legendary fighters from across space and time—including the iconic ninja Hayabusa—to combat the malevolent alien warlord Jyashin before he destroys Earth.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Flying Warriors breaks the traditional NES action-platformer mold by aggressively shifting its gameplay perspectives. The game unfolds across three distinct phases of play. First, players navigate overhead map screens to talk with NPCs and trigger plot progression. Second, players dive into side-scrolling platforming stages where Rick must leap across treacherous chasms and battle standard foes using acrobatic kicks and punches. The most memorable mechanic, however, is the one-on-one boss battles. When facing major adversaries, the camera zooms into an over-the-shoulder, Punch-Out!!-style arena. In these intense cinematic duels, players must react in real-time, choosing to duck, jump, or unleash devastating special psychic moves known as 'Power Balls.' Mastering the timing of these defensive dodges and offensive counter-attacks is crucial to surviving the grueling later stages, blending traditional martial arts brawling with strict pattern memorization.
