The original Aspect Star comes to your Nintendo Entertainment System! Aspect Star “N” is an action game with nine levels and inter-level cutscenes where you utilize the three aspects to defeat your enemies and move on to the next stage.

Meet Nicole, and see how she and her stuffed animal friend Zip go and defeat an evil alliance that has formed among the enemies of cats! Can Nicole save the day?

II. How to play

This version of Aspect Star “N” is distributed as a standard NES ROM. Simply load “aspect.nes” in any NES emulator of your choice, and configure it according to how that emulator works. You may also use a flash cartridge.

Aspect Star “N” has been tested on actual hardware using a PowerPak flash cartridge, and on the FCEUX emulator. Other emulators should work fine; it doesn’t do anything too tricky.

Story views:
(A) – Progress through story
(START) – Skip story

Gameplay:
(D-PAD) – Move Nicole
(A) – Fire a projectile
(START) – Pause

Levels end once all enemies on-screen are defeated. You will fire a projectile of the same aspect as you; change your aspect by stepping on the tiles marked with a symbol of the aspect. The “aspect” is the symbol displayed above your character’s head. The aspect of your projectile must match the aspect of the enemy or the enemy will not be defeated.

You are always vulnerable to enemy attacks, regardless of aspect! Stay safe out there.

Press the “SELECT” button on the title screen, and the enemy chasing Nicole will change. What could this mean? You’ll have to play the game to find out!

Developed independently and initially distributed for the Family Computer (Famicom) network system via the Retro-Bit / Tatara network in Japan, *Aspect Star N* is a fascinating curio in retro gaming history. Released long after the console's commercial peak, it channels the frantic energy of 8-bit run-and-gun platformers while injecting a quirky, sci-fi magical girl aesthetic. Players assume the role of Nova, a cosmic guardian tasked with reclaiming scattered astral fragments from a rogue planetary syndicate. Unlike mainstream licensed titles of the era, this game embraces obscure lore, featuring a bizarre blend of futuristic mecha design and occult planetary magic across its five sprawling, trap-laden stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Aspect Star N stands out through its dual-phase gameplay mechanics. Players traverse vertically and horizontally scrolling environments, jumping across crumbling platforms while blasting robotic swarms. Nova’s primary weapon is the 'Star Beam,' which can be charged by holding down the attack button to unleash a screen-clearing plasma burst. Unique to Nova's arsenal is the 'Aspect Shift' ability: collecting glowing celestial orbs allows her to temporarily morph into different zodiac-inspired avatars—such as the agile Taurus Dash or the hovering Gemini Shield—each granting distinct movement properties and offensive capabilities. Boss encounters require precise timing, demanding that players memorize complex projectile patterns and exploit brief vulnerability windows while managing a strict health gauge and limited lives.
