Description

Super Uwol is a 2D platformer created for the devkitSMS competition 2016 and it largely retains the concept of the original 2009 Uwol: Quest for Money by the same developers.

Each room represents a single-screen platform level with coins and enemies. By moving through sides of the screen horizontally the character appears on the other side. When all coins are collected two exits appears and Uwol can choose a new level in the pyramid with some freedom for the path to follow based on the chosen exit.

Super Uwol

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized as an MSX homebrew tribute by Mojon Twins, Super Uwol made a triumphant, officially licensed leap to the Nintendo Entertainment System thanks to publisher Broke Studio. This frantic arcade-platformer blends the golden-age coin-op philosophy of titles like Bubble Bobble and Chuckie Egg with modern pixel-art polish. The storyline casts you as Uwol, a furry treasure hunter exploring perilous, single-screen catacombs across multiple themed worlds—ranging from ancient Egyptian tombs to chilling dungeons—in a desperate bid to collect enough gold coins to pay off his exorbitant debts before time runs out.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Super Uwol demands razor-sharp reflexes and meticulous route planning. Each stage is presented as a fixed, single-screen labyrinth filled with static platforms, moving hazards, and relentless enemies that spawn continuously. Uwol’s primary defensive and offensive maneuver involves tossing temporary projectiles to stun encroaching beasts, clearing a safe path to snatch scattered loot. As you clear screens, you progress through distinct thematic zones, each introducing devious new environmental hazards like vanishing blocks, slippery ice, and bouncing spring-boards. The game features vibrant, retro-authentic NES graphics with colorful sprites, fluid platforming physics, and an energetic chiptune soundtrack that drives the frenetic pacing forward.
