Gauntlet II

Overview & History

Released by Tengen for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, Gauntlet II is the home console port of Atari Games' iconic 1986 arcade dungeon crawler. While the original coin-op featured groundbreaking four-player cooperative play, the NES adaptation scaled the maximum player count down to two, yet managed to preserve the frantic, maze-crawling essence of the franchise. Tasked with navigating endless, monster-infested catacombs to find the exit stairs, players must manage a constantly ticking health meter that acts as both a time limit and a life bar. The game introduced selectable identical character colors, allowing both players to choose the same hero simultaneously—a major fix from the first game. The infamous voice announcer ("Warrior needs food badly!") returns to relentlessly heckle your performance as you blast through hordes of ghosts, grunts, demons, and lobbers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players choose from four distinct heroes: Thor the Warrior (high strength and melee prowess), Thyra the Valkyrie (balanced armor and combat), Merlin the Wizard (devastating magic attacks but fragile health), and Questor the Elf (superior speed and ranged agility). Each character handles uniquely within the grid-based labyrinths. Gameplay mechanics revolve around destroying enemy generators (spawners), collecting keys to unlock doors, grabbing treasure for high scores, and downing magic potions that instantly wipe all on-screen enemies. New to this sequel are "It" panels that curse a random player, making monsters specifically hunt them down until tagged onto another player, plus reflective wall tiles and trick exits that test your spatial memory.
