Description

Ghostbusters II is a single-player side-scrolling game. Generally, the player controls a ghostbuster as he explores levels based on the film. The character’s goal is to make his way to the museum before time runs out. Two levels involve riding around in the heroes’ famous car. In another level the player controls the Statue of Liberty, shooting fireballs. The ghostbuster character is armed with unlimited supplies of slime that can be shot out of a cannon and ghost traps.

Ghostbusters II

Overview & History

Released by Activision in North America in June 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Ghostbusters II capitalized on the massive box-office success of the cinematic sequel. Developed by Imagineering, this platforming adaptation breaks away from the top-down driving mechanics of the infamous first NES game, opting instead for a multi-stage action formula. The storyline loosely follows the movie's plot, tasking the intrepid paranormal exterminators with saving New York City from the malevolent, subterranean museum curator Vigo the Carpathian and a massive surge of pink psychomagnotheric slime. Players must navigate perilous sewers, scale the Manhattan Museum of Art, and even pilot the Statue of Liberty through the city streets to crash through the museum roof in a daring rescue mission.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is divided into distinct stages with wildly varying gameplay perspectives. The adventure begins in the sewer systems where characters walk side-scrolling platforms, zapping ghosts with standard proton streams and collecting slime blowtorches. A notorious highlight is the overhead driving sequence steering the mobile command center while dodging hazards, followed by the iconic first-person perspective stage where players fire streams at the Statue of Liberty's interior walls. Character selection matters slightly, though control physics remain notoriously slippery across all selectable Ghostbusters (Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston). Players can jump over obstacles, crouch, and unleash standard weapon upgrades, but precise platforming is notoriously difficult due to high-inertia movement and unforgiving enemy placement. Defeating mini-bosses and managing limited health meters requires careful timing, making this one of the era's more memorably frustrating licensed challenges.
