Description

Two different versions were released for the Famicom/NES. The Japanese version was released in 1987, developed and published by Sunsoft. The American unlicensed version was released in 1989, developed and published by Tengen.

Imagine the wildest, wackiest place in the Universe and you’ve got Fantasy Zone. As Opa-Opa, a living spaceship, you’ll marvel at the incredible landscapes filled with the strangest creatures. Watch out. They may look cute and innocent, but they’re Menons, nasty aliens that have overrun the eight planets that make up Fantasy Zone.

Your job is to clear each world of Menons. Every time you zap one, it runs into a coin. Collect enough coins and you can buy power-up items like deadlier weapons and mightier engines. At the end of every planet lurks a super-powerful boss. Find a way to blast past these monsters in order to continue your exciting journey in the Fantasy Zone.

Fantasy Zone (Tengen)

Overview & History

Released in 1987, Tengen’s unauthorized port of Sega’s arcade classic brought the pastel-hued, cute-em-up chaos of Opa-Opa to the NES. Unlike the Japanese Famicom version published by Sunsoft, Tengen’s NES adaptation is renowned for its superior graphical fidelity, tighter controls, and an orchestral rearrangement of Hiroshi Kawaguchi's iconic soundtrack. The storyline takes place in the fantasy-themed planet system of the same name, where the peaceful inhabitants are invaded by the dark forces of the Menon. Players control Opa-Opa, a sentient, winged spaceship with a surprisingly robust arsenal, tasked with restoring peace across eight vibrant, looping planetary zones.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Fantasy Zone diverges from standard linear side-scrollers by allowing bidirectional horizontal flight. Each stage requires Opa-Opa to destroy a specific quota of floating enemy generators ('bases') before a bizarre boss fight triggers. Defeating enemies drops gold coins, which are mandatory for survival. Unlike the arcade original, Tengen introduced a shopping system accessed by flying into red warp zones, letting players purchase temporary engine speed boosts, shield orbs, and devastating weaponry like the 7-Way Shot or Big-Bang Bombs. However, purchases have time limits, and failing to manage your coin economy leads to brutal late-game difficulty spikes.
