Description

20,000 years in the future, mankind has built a giant supercomputer named DARK to rule the planet. For hundreds of years, DARK has governed with wisdom and justice. But now the unthinkable has happened: DARK is malfunctioning, and humanity is writhing in the grasp of a ruthless tyrant. DARK has built a fleet of robot warships to patrol the skies, and has created an army of mutant monsters to guard the underground bases from which he now terrorizes mankind. Lulled by hundreds of years of peace, the people of earth are defensless against the minions of DARK. But two brave young men, following an ancient legend of Greek mythology, have devised mechanical wings to bear them aloft in search of DARK’s hidden fortress. Armed with the last remaining guns and missiles from a crumbling arsenal, you must fly them across the continents and oceans to seek out and destroy the cruel colossus! If you fail, mankind is lost. Take wing, Legendary Soldiers!

Legendary Wings

Overview & History

Developed and published by Capcom, Legendary Wings (known in Japan as Ares no Tsubasa) made its triumphant leap from the arcade coin-ops to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. Set in a dystopian future where a supercomputer called "DARK" threatens humanity, the Goddess of War bestows mechanical wings upon two brave warriors, Michelle Heart and Kevin Cox. Your mission is to battle through ancient, apocalyptic, and futuristic landscapes across five distinct stages to destroy the rogue AI. This unique blend of Greek mythology and sci-fi pulp gave the NES library a distinct visual and atmospheric identity, marrying vertical scrolling shoot-em-up action with frantic, ground-based platforming segments.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Legendary Wings alternates seamlessly between two distinct gameplay perspectives. In outdoor stages, players control their winged hero from a top-down vertical perspective, dodging enemy fire while blasting floating defense networks and terrestrial turrets. Collecting power-ups upgrades your basic projectile into a devastating wide-spread laser or a fiery boomerang. When entering subterranean fortresses, the perspective shifts to a side-scrolling platformer. Here, players must carefully time their jumps across bottomless chasms while utilizing dual-directional attacks to eliminate crawling and flying mechanical beasts. Defeating mini-bosses rewards players with glowing orbs that expand health bars and increase firepower. The game also features a legendary two-player cooperative mode, allowing friends to take down the wrathful mechanical gods side-by-side.
