Mario Bros.

Overview & History

Originally engineered by Shigeru Miyamoto as an arcade smash in 1983 before finding its legendary home on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986, Mario Bros. established the definitive cooperative multiplayer DNA for the plumber duo. Departing from the vertical scrolling of later adventures, this single-screen platformer traps Mario and his brother Luigi within a subterranean New York City sewer system overrun by rogue pests. Instead of jumping directly on enemies' heads from above, players must strike the floor from underneath to flip foes onto their backs before kicking them into the churning water below.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanic revolves around momentum-based platforming and psychological spatial control across multi-tiered steel platforms. Hazards continuously spawn from upper pipes, ranging from the slow-walking Shellcreepers to the erratic Sidesteepers—which require two hits to flip—and the airborne Fighter Flies that leap unpredictably. When the screen becomes overwhelmed, players can panic-hit the central "POW" block, sending a seismic shockwave that instantly flips every active enemy on the screen. However, the POW block is a finite resource with only three uses per round. The game introduces escalating difficulty through the slippery ice-physics of later stages and the dreaded Fireballs that bounce frantically across platforms, demanding precise reflexes and cooperative synergy to clear increasingly hostile subterranean waves.
