Description

M.U.S.C.L.E. (Millions of Unusual Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere) is an early NES wrestling game based on the line of toys popular in the 1980s. M.U.S.C.L.E. allows you to choose two wrestling stars from the M.U.S.C.L.E. universe (from a selection of eight) in a tag-team match tournament in one player mode, and versus a friend in two player mode. Each wrestler has one special move that can be used by collecting the power pellet that floats around the ring at random instances.

Overview & History

Released by Bandai in 1986 for the Family Computer in Japan and subsequently localized for the North American Nintendo Entertainment System, M.U.S.C.L.E.: Tag Team Match is a cult-classic wrestling title based on Yudetamago’s massively popular Kinnikuman manga and anime franchise. Divorced from its Japanese storyline concerning intergalactic superhero wrestling tournaments to save Earth, the Western release dropped the Kinnikuman branding, reframing the roster of bizarre, muscular action figures simply as anonymous grappling toys. Despite its primitive presentation and lack of a traditional story mode in the localized version, the game holds a unique place in history as one of the earliest wrestling titles on home consoles, laying foundational mechanics for cooperative tag-team bouts long before the genre was refined in the 16-bit era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game departs from standard grappling simulations by focusing on fast-paced, arcade-style skirmishes across single-screen, platform-infused arenas. Players select a duo of wrestlers from a diverse roster including Kinnikuman (Muscleman), Terryman, Robin Mask, and Ramenman, each possessing distinct sprite designs and color palettes. The core objective of a Tag Team Match is to deplete the opponent’s health bar or execute a successful pinfall, but survival relies heavily on capturing falling briefcases dropped randomly from the sky. These briefcases yield critical power-ups, ranging from health restorations and temporary speed boosts to devastating finisher attacks that can instantly turn the tide of battle. Movement utilizes vertical jumping across multiple platforms, introducing a layer of aerial combat where players can dive-kick opponents or execute running clotheslines. Grappling initiates automatically upon contact, triggering a rapid button-mashing contest to determine who executes the throw. While simplistic by modern standards, the frantic pacing and frantic two-player cooperative mode demand sharp reflexes and strategic tag-ins before a partner's stamina completely depletes.
