Released by Color Dreams in 1990, *Menace Beach* is a notorious, unlicensed scrolling platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed during an era when Color Dreams circumvented Nintendo's strict 10NES lockout chip, the game gained massive notoriety largely due to its suggestive packaging and unrated status. Unlike standard family-friendly fares, the storyline follows a young woman named Sunny on a bizarre quest to rescue her boyfriend, Steve, who has been kidnapped and stripped naked by a bizarre gang of weirdos, ranging from rolling barrels to walking snowmen. Players must guide Sunny through multi-phased environments while unlocking a progressive revealing image of Steve upon stage completion, a feature that cemented its cult status among collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is split into distinct gameplay loops. The primary phase requires Sunny to traverse horizontally-scrolling urban and industrial environments using a unique projectile weapon: hurled handfuls of explosive "garbage" like empty cans and bottles. Enemies spawn relentlessly, requiring precise timing to jump over hazards while rapidly throwing projectiles. Periodically, the game shifts perspective entirely into a bizarre top-down skateboarding minigame, where players must dodge obstacles and ram into boss characters to progress. Navigation demands absolute precision due to unforgiving collision detection, and Sunny's vulnerability means every misjudged leap can quickly drain her limited health pool, leading to a frantic trial-and-error experience.
