Description
Sequel to Ganbare Goemon!, Goemon 2 puts you back in the shoes of Goemon as he traverses feudal Japan looking to bring justice to any corrupt baddies he may find.
Joining Goemon in his adventure is the wacky ninja Ebisumaru which allows for simultaneous 2-player gameplay, marking the biggest difference in terms of gameplay with the original. The game keeps the straightforward side-scrolling beat ’em up formula and even removes some of the maze-like elements in the previous game, adding new weapons and upgrades to make the game more action-oriented. Wandering through the stages is still possible and you can enter several stores and locations and trigger amusing humorous sequences keeping in tone with the lighthearted spirit of the series.
Ganbare Goemon 2
Overview & History
Released by Konami in 1989 exclusively for the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan, Ganbare Goemon 2 serves as the true sequel to the arcade and Famicom cult classic, refining the whimsical, Edo-period action-adventure formula. While the original game laid the groundwork for Konami’s iconic take on Japanese folklore, this iteration expanded the scope with denser stage layouts, memorable boss encounters, and the introduction of cooperative two-player simultaneous gameplay—allowing a second player to control the ninja Ebisumaru alongside the titular protagonist Goemon. Steeped in vibrant satire of feudal Japan mixed with bizarre, anachronistic humor, this 8-bit gem remains a high-water mark for Konami's early platforming output, though it tragically never received an official Western localization during its era.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Ganbare Goemon 2 drops players into a brilliantly structured top-down and side-scrolling hybrid world. Players navigate bustling towns to purchase upgrades, gamble in mini-games, and gather intelligence before diving into linear action stages. Goemon wields his signature pipe (Kiseru) for melee strikes and can toss lethal koban (gold coins) as a ranged projectile, while Ebisumaru attacks with heavy paddles and spinning slaps. Money is the lifeblood of the game; collecting cash allows players to buy armor, life-extending cats, and pass tickets required to progress. A standout mechanic is the inclusion of giant robot boss battles, foreshadowing the massive mecha sequences that would later define the series on the Super Famicom. The level design cleverly balances fast-paced combat with labyrinthine exploration, requiring players to uncover hidden doors, shopkeepers, and secret merchants to maximize their offensive and defensive capabilities before facing punishing end-of-stage bosses.
