Description

Returning from three centuries of intergalactic missions, MCS-920 is surprised by an alien-infested planet. Whatever few lifeforms survived were driven underground or transformed into battling bionic mutants. You must escape the tentacles of these mutants, seek out and destroy alien ships, then overpower grotesque alien guards to steal their fiendish and bizarre weapons. From barren landscapes and colorful coral reefs to abandoned and frozen cities, you will yet come face to face with the alien tyrant in each world!

Metal Fighter

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 by ASK Kodansha, Metal Fighter is a lesser-known side-scrolling sci-fi action platformer for the Famicom. Set in a dystopian future where humanity faces extinction from an encroaching robotic menace, the game follows a rogue mech pilot brave enough to infiltrate the metallic hive mind. Unlike traditional run-and-gun titles of the era, Metal Fighter blends tight vertical and horizontal stage navigation with a unique transformation mechanic, setting it apart visually and mechanically from contemporaries like Contra or Shatterhand. Though it never saw an official localized release in North America, it has since achieved cult status among retro collectors for its atmospheric cyberpunk sprite work and pulsating chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot a versatile battle suit across labyrinthine industrial complexes, alien terrains, and mechanical fortresses. The core mechanic revolves around switching states between a nimble bipedal robot and a high-mobility hovercraft. In robot mode, your character can unleash devastating directional beam attacks and execute precision jumps across crumbling platforms. Transforming into the hovercraft mode allows players to slide through tight, low-ceiling tunnels, evade dense bullet hell patterns, and cross hazardous terrain at high speeds. Along the way, players collect specialized power-up chips to upgrade their offensive firepower, ranging from wide-spread laser arrays to screen-clearing plasma bombs. Boss encounters at the end of each sector require mastering both forms, testing the player's reflexes against multi-phase mechanical behemoths.
