Description
The shadows of doom grow long as the ancient Egyptian villain Sutekh envelops Metro City with a wave of crime. But Sutekh’s seedy underworld is about to be infiltrated by a superhero unlike any the world has ever seen. A superhero who can melt into the darkness like a phantom. By day this brave new crimefighter is a common ordinary citizen. But when night falls, he is cloaked in a secret identity to seek out and destroy the dark forces that lurk on midnight streets. Who is this man the press calls Nightshade? Only you can answer that… for he is you! Every night you solidify your superhero status, patrolling 100 of the city’s darkest corners. Here you’ll find thieves, muggers, and other alley scum that you must either deal with or destroy for clues. But be warned. You’re not the only night stalker. For as you hunt Sutekh, Sutekh hunts you with the human printing press, the closing wall of spikes, deadly jackal pits, and the chilling freeze ray. Of course the ultimate key to destroying Sutekh is your popularity. For it’s a power source that gives you the wit to decipher clues and the strength to pulverize villains and rescue innocent bystanders. Remember, if this heroic prowess ever diminishes, you’ll no longer control the night. You’ll be consumed by it.
Nightshade
Overview & History
Released by Ultra Games in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Nightshade: Part 1 - The Claws of Graft is a quirky neo-noir action-adventure game developed by Beam Software. Set in the crime-ridden metropolis of Metro City, the storyline follows Mark Gray, a cynical vigilante operating under the superhero moniker Nightshade. When the tyrannical crime lord known as Graft—backed by the Syndicate of Underworld Weirdos—murder the city's mayor and rig the metropolis to explode with five atomic bombs, Nightshade must step out of the shadows. Originally intended as the launchpad for a multi-part episodic franchise, the game combined traditional side-scrolling platforming with an innovative graphic adventure interface, though subsequent sequels never materialized due to lukewarm commercial success.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard NES platformers, Nightshade heavily incorporates point-and-click adventure elements into its gritty superhero premise. Players must navigate urban environments, interview eccentric civilian informants, examine clues, and defuse complex bomb puzzles using gathered inventory items. However, the game is uniquely infamous for its agonizing 'death trap' sequences. If Nightshade fails to solve certain environmental puzzles within a strict time limit, he is captured and lowered into bizarre, comic-book-style execution chambers—such as being tied to a slowly descending buzzsaw or suspended over a pool of boiling acid—requiring quick-witted item usage to escape. The action segments feature nimble martial arts combat, allowing Mark Gray to punch, kick, and leap across perilous rooftops while dodging armed thugs and mutant assassins.
