As Trophy, you must navigate challenging environmental obstacles and terrain, such as water, snow, moving platforms, and even zero gravity. Collect power-ups and upgrade Trophy’s health and weapon systems, all while battling enemies throughout the levels. Be prepared, though, as at the end of each level you will have to square off against one of the largest bosses ever seen on the NES!

Developed by Gradual Games and published by Mega Cat Studios, *Trophy* is a remarkable late-comer to the Nintendo Entertainment System library, released physically in 2021. Designed to capture the authentic aesthetic and technical constraints of classic 8-bit platformers, the game tells the sci-fi tale of a robotic protagonist named Trophy. Built by the wise Professor Procyon, Trophy must rescue his creator and defeat the evil cyborg Lord Retro, who has taken over the planet Tecratis. Blending the melancholic isolation of *Mega Man* with the gritty mechanical charm of *Journey to Silius*, *Trophy* pushes the NES hardware with fluid character animations, parallax scrolling backgrounds, and a phenomenal chiptune soundtrack crafted by Saitune.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Trophy is a traditional run-and-gun action-platformer spanning six distinct, hazard-filled worlds, ranging from desolate industrial complexes to cavernous underground facilities. Players navigate complex labyrinthine stages fraught with automated turrets, floating mines, and aggressive robotic wildlife. Trophy’s primary offensive tool is an arm cannon, which fires standard energy pellets, but players can discover scattered weapon upgrades granting explosive projectiles and directional firing arcs. The gameplay loop demands precise platforming and spatial memory, featuring grueling environmental hazards and challenging boss encounters at the end of every zone. Players must manage a strict health bar and limited lives, though carefully placed checkpoints and hidden energy tanks offer vital relief during exploration.
