Description

Super Gun is a shooter and one of the rarest games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. There were unlicensed Famicom and NES versions, neither had ever been dumped. In North America, it was also part of the unreleased and unlicensed sequel to Caltron 6-in-1, Caltron 9-in-1.

It was extracted from the only known Caltron 9-in-1 prototype in 2019 by Frank Cifaldi. The only known difference between this version and the 72-pin version is the copyright date on the title screen.

Super Gun

Overview & History

Released during the twilight era of the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992 by an obscure Taiwanese developer, Super Gun is a notorious unauthorized bootleg action-platformer that pushes the humble 8-bit hardware to its absolute limits. While it never saw an official licensed release in North America or Japan, it gained a legendary cult status among retro gaming collectors and cartridge hunters for its surprisingly ambitious production values, bizarre post-apocalyptic storyline featuring cyborg mercenaries rebelling against an interstellar syndicate, and its notoriously punishing difficulty curve that rivaled Contra and Ninja Gaiden.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike typical run-and-gun titles of the era, Super Gun introduces a dual-weapon gauge and a unique momentum-based sliding mechanic that alters how players navigate treacherous industrial stages. Players control the rogue cyborg protagonist, Jax, whose primary objective is to infiltrate five sprawling mechanical fortresses. Jax possesses a versatile arsenal: a rapid-fire plasma blaster, a chargeable laser beam, and close-quarters energy blade strikes. Defeated enemies drop microchips that upgrade the player's firing rate and defense shielding. The game is particularly infamous for its chaotic vertical-scrolling jetpack stages and intense multi-phased boss battles that require precise pixel-perfect dodging and pattern memorization.
