Phantom Fighter

Overview & History

Developed by Macon and published in North America by FCI in 1990, Phantom Fighter (originally released in Japan as *Kyonshiizu 2*) drops players into a mystical ancient China overrun by the undead. You assume the role of Kenji, a Taoist martial arts master tasked with eradicating hordes of hopping vampires known as Jiangshi, along with various other Chinese folklore demons. Distinct from standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups of the NES era, the game blends action-platforming with an overworld town exploration phase. You must navigate village grids, entering haunted houses to exorcise evil spirits before the town succumbs entirely to the supernatural infestation. It remains a cult-classic curio for its eerie atmosphere, unique horror theme, and challenging difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay is split into two distinct tiers: the overhead town map and the side-scrolling combat stages. On the town map, you guide Kenji between cursed buildings, occasionally fighting wandering spirits or buying crucial items like healing herbs and talismans from local shops. Once inside a haunted structure, the perspective shifts to a 2D side-scrolling platformer where Kenji faces relentless waves of Jiangshi, flying specters, and bosses. Kenji relies on a versatile arsenal of martial arts strikes, including rapid-fire punches, high-flying kicks, and special Taoist magic scrolls that can freeze or obliterate enemies. Power-ups scattered throughout stages increase Kenji's maximum health, boost his attack speed, and upgrade his mystical jumping boots to reach higher platforms. Managing your spiritual energy and keeping track of the town's remaining corruption level is vital to preventing a game-over scenario.
