Journey

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1987, Journey for the Nintendo Entertainment System brings the legendary rock band's iconic sci-fi iconography to 8-bit cartridges. Based on their 1983 album and tour, the storyline casts players as members of the band—Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Jonathan Cain, and Steve Smith—on a cosmic quest to reclaim their stolen instruments from the menacing Planet X. Unlike the arcade version's digitized faces, the NES adaptation relies on charming, compressed sprite art and an unmistakable 8-bit rendition of "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" that loops relentlessly as you traverse alien landscapes to rescue the universe through the power of rock.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay is structured into five distinct stages, each representing a band member traversing a bizarre alien world filled with hostile creatures, gravity traps, and security drones. Before the main platforming action begins, players must navigate a vertical-scrolling rhythm-action sequence to safely land the band's glowing scarab spaceship, the *Journey* flyer, dodging meteors and cosmic debris. Once landed, characters must retrieve their specific missing instrument—such as Steve Perry's microphone or Neal Schon's guitar—while leaping across treacherous platforms and avoiding hazards. Successfully completing all five stages reunites the band for a final, high-scoring musical finale.
