Released in 1990 exclusively for the Japanese Family Computer (Famicom) by Sachen, Pyramid is an obscure, unlicensed platform-puzzle hybrid steeped in ancient Egyptian lore. Developed during an era when pirate and independent developers pushed the Famicom's hardware limits, the game puts players in the sandals of an intrepid archaeologist exploring the cursed, trap-laden catacombs of the Pharaohs. Unlike standard linear side-scrollers, Pyramid blends frantic action with spatial problem-solving, requiring players to manipulate the very architecture of the tombs to survive mummies, scarabs, and collapsing corridors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around navigating single-screen and multi-tiered vertical chambers inside the titular monument. The protagonist is equipped with a short-range excavation pick used not only to defend against creeping undead enemies but also to strategically carve paths through crumbling blocks of sandstone. Players must collect scattered ankhs and golden relics while avoiding lethal spikes, rolling boulders, and bottomless pits. Enemies possess distinct patrol patterns, forcing players to time their block-breaking mechanics precisely—often trapping foes in temporary pits or burying them beneath shifting rubble.
