Description

Get your kicks from QIX, the original brain-twisting arcade hit now available for your NES! QIX is one of the quirkiest adversaries you’ll ever encounter. It thrives on finding new and outrageous ways to perplex, vex and manipulate your mind. QIX appears as a whirling multi-colored helix that lives in the depths of your system – relentlessly seeking to wear down your mental defenses. The only way to neutralize QIX is by containing it. But you’ll have to think fast, and act even faster. QIX will use its mutant offspring Sparx and Spritz to squelch any attempt to stop it. Capture QIX, or suffer the ultimate mental anguish. Total breakdown! Just remember, your mind is your only weapon.

QIX

Overview & History

Originally conceived by Randy and Debby Pfeiffer in 1981 as an abstract arcade puzzle phenomenon, Qix made its way to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989, published by Taito. Unlike traditional platformers of the era, Qix completely eschews storylines, saving heroes, or traditional combat, instead plunging the player into a hypnotic, minimalist geometric void. The NES port successfully translates the tense, strategic gameplay of the coin-op original into the home console format, retaining the stark black background, neon-colored vectors, and the agonizing psychological pressure of racing against a relentless, wandering wireframe entity known as the Qix.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of Qix is to claim territory by drawing closed rectangles—known as "Stix"—to fill up at least 75% of the playing field. Players control a small marker navigating the border of the screen, venturing out into the blank arena to carve out sections. The tension escalates with the presence of the unpredictable Qix, which bounces erratically within the unmapped space, and deadly Sparx units that relentlessly patrol the borders and your unfinished lines. To survive, players must balance speed and safety by choosing between a slow, methodical draw (Slow Draw, worth more points) and a rapid dash (Fast Draw). Along the way, power-ups like Sparx-freezing Zappers and multipliers appear to alter the tactical landscape across increasingly aggressive difficulty levels.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the marker along boundaries and unfinished lines
  • Action Keys: Hold A for Fast Draw, hold B for Slow Draw
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
