Raid on Bungeling Bay

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft for the NES in 1985 (following its original debut on home computers), Raid on Bungeling Bay was designed by Will Wright before he founded Maxis, acting as the conceptual prototype that eventually birthed SimCity. The storyline casts the player as a lone helicopter pilot tasked with halting the militaristic ambitions of the tyrannical Bungeling Empire. Your mission is to infiltrate their island archipelago, bomb their war-factory complex, and prevent them from completing a catastrophic ultimate weapon. Unlike linear side-scrollers of the era, the game utilizes a freely scrolling, wrap-around map where time passes dynamically. As you delay your assaults, enemy production increases, churning out ever-deadlier fighters and battleships to hunt you down across the azure seas.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot a heavily armed yet surprisingly fragile helicopter across a sprawling, multi-island map viewed from a top-down perspective. Your primary objective is to strategically drop bombs on the centralized industrial factories of the Bungeling Empire while managing limited ammunition and severe fuel consumption. Fuel depots are scattered across the islands, requiring precision landings on designated pads to refloat and refuel your chopper—a tense mechanic since enemy turrets will relentlessly fire at you while grounded. Dogfighting enemy planes requires careful positioning, as your machine gun fires strictly straight ahead relative to your aircraft's nose, independent of your current flight direction. Ammo crates must be occasionally retrieved from friendly aircraft carriers, adding another layer of logistical panic to the relentless aerial bombardment.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Steer the helicopter in 8 directions
  • Action Keys: Fire machine guns and drop bombs
  • Enter: Start / Pause
