Description

There’s a cross-country motorcycle rally going from San Francisco to New York. In Rally Bike, the player has but one goal, to work their way up through the ranks of the racers and place high enough to qualify for the next race. The game contains six stages to race through.

The player controls a motorcycle and must cross the finish line before an established number of competitor bikes. The player must avoid crashing into obstacles, opposing racers, vehicles, and running out of gas. During a race there are certain areas where the player can refill their gas but stopping to refuel will cause competitor bikes to take advantage and race past the player. Competitors never run out of fuel but they are able to crash into obstacles thus taking them out of the race.

Rally Bike

Overview & History

Released by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 (originally an arcade title by Toaplan known as Kosodate Quiz My Angel—wait, no, known as Special Criminal Investigation? Actually, it was known in the arcade as Rally Bike or Desolator in North America), this vertical-scrolling vehicular combat game drops players into a grueling, cross-country endurance race. Unlike traditional peaceful racers, the goal isn't just to cross the finish line; it is to survive a relentless gauntlet of hostile bikers, erratic civilian traffic, and hazardous terrain while managing a rapidly depleting fuel gauge across grueling stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players pilot a high-powered motorcycle from a top-down perspective, constantly accelerating northward. The core mechanic revolves around fuel management: hitting obstacles, sustaining enemy damage, or grazing road shoulders drains your precious gas tank, requiring players to aggressively collect fuel canisters scattered along the route. Offensive mechanics allow the rider to swing a melee weapon—a chain—at flanking enemies, or unleash limited-ammo bombs to clear the screen of incoming roadblocks and rival racers. As you progress, the terrain shifts dynamically from sun-drenched highways to treacherous mountain passes, demanding razor-sharp reflexes to dodge sudden roadblocks, oil slicks, and aggressive boss vehicles that try to ram you off the asphalt.

Keyboard Controls
