Description

Rambo is a side scrolling platform game where the player controls Rambo with his mission to Vietnam. The game starts at the military base before getting sent to Vietnam. In Vietnam, Rambo has to fight animals in the jungles, swamps, and caves like wasps, snakes, fish, tigers, bats, spiders, birds, apes and flamingos. Before making his way to the POW camp he has to fight guards and mercenaries that can kick and shoot him, all wearing different color shirts depending on how powerful they are. The game also requires the player to navigate a complex map requiring the player to find North and South points on the ground to go up and down levels as well as East and West by moving Rambo to the edge of the screen. There are 6 different weapons that Rambo can pick up that are knife, throwing knife, bow and arrow, bow and exploring arrow, gun, and hand grenade. All the weapons but the knife has limited ammo which is collected from killed enemies. There is also health vile that restores health as well as mission specific items that Rambo must find to complete some missions. The game uses password save that can be retrieved when talking to any person.

Rambo

Overview & History

Released by Acclaim Entertainment in 1988, Rambo: First Blood Part II for the Nintendo Entertainment System adapts Sylvester Stallone's iconic action sequel into a side-scrolling, top-down hybrid adventure. Unlike standard linear shooters of its era, the game attempts an ambitious blend of action and role-playing elements, requiring players to rescue American POWs held deep within hostile Vietnamese jungles. While critically panned upon release for its steep difficulty and clunky combat translation, it has since achieved a cult following among retro collectors fascinated by its unique tonal shift from the source material, which strangely includes battling giant bosses and collecting heart icons from defeated enemies.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear shooters, Rambo shifts perspectives between overhead exploration zones and side-scrolling combat encounters. Players begin armed only with a combat knife, but can quickly acquire iconic weaponry like explosive arrows for Rambo’s signature bow, an M60 machine gun, and time-detonated grenades. Progression relies on rescuing captive soldiers and locating vital equipment hidden inside enemy camps. However, the game is notoriously punishing: colliding with enemies drains health rapidly, and dying sends Rambo back to a checkpoint without his advanced gear. Survival requires careful positioning, resource management, and utilizing Rambo’s knife for silent kills to conserve precious ammunition.
