Description

That’s right, folks, the cartoon you know and love is ready to roll again – except this time you get to be Road Runner!
The desert’s plenty dangerous all by itself; falling boulders, oncoming trucks, land mines and cannon balls as well as mazes, sand traps and ravines.

Throw in that crafty Wile E. Coyote and you’ve got one wild-goose chase that’s fun, fast and exciting!
He may not be too bright, but he is hungry. And he’s got his rocket, jet skates, pogo stick and helicopter.
Better get cookin’ before you get cooked.

Road Runner

Overview & History

Released by Tengen for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, Road Runner brings the chaotic cat-and-mouse energy of the classic Chuck Jones cartoons straight to the 8-bit living room. Originally an arcade smash hit by Atari, the NES port tasks players with guiding the perpetually fast-running bird across the arid American Southwest while dodging the relentless, rocket-propelled schemes of Wile E. Coyote. While it lacks the fluid sprite scaling of the arcade original, this console adaptation leans heavily into trial-and-error platforming, puzzle logic, and sheer reflexes, capturing the frantic humor of the source material.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control the blue streak as he continuously sprints from left to right across horizontally scrolling desert levels. To survive, the Road Runner must gobble up scattered birdseed for points and stamina while navigating a gauntlet of ACME-branded hazards, including dynamite crates, collapsing bridges, and the Coyote’s erratic contraptions. If the Road Runner stops moving for too long, or if Wile E. catches up via jetpack, tornado, or pogo stick, you lose a life. Scattered tornadoes can be used to hitch rides across dangerous chasms, and eating passing trucks grants temporary invincibility.
