Overview & History

Developed by Tengen and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, RoadBlasters is a frantic port of Atari’s 1987 sit-down arcade classic. Unlike standard side-scrolling racers, this vehicular combat game drops you into a pseudo-3D, rear-view perspective set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The dystopian storyline casts you as an elite driver tasked with navigating hostile, mutant-infested highways to eradicate the oppressive rule of a mysterious dictator. While the original arcade cabinet utilized specialized force-feedback steering, the NES adaptation ingeniously remaps the high-octane vehicular carnage to standard digital inputs, trading analog precision for pure, relentless pixelated action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Survival on the highway depends on balancing aggressive offense with strict resource management. You pilot an armed sports car across 50 distinct rally stages divided by rally check-points. Your primary weapon is an unlimited forward-firing laser, but true mastery requires strategic deployment of limited-ammo special armaments. Collecting floating power-ups grants access to devastating smart bombs that clear the screen of hazards, high-speed nitro boosts, and multi-directional spike mines. However, the relentless ticking of a decreasing fuel meter serves as your primary antagonist; you must constantly shoot roadside targets or run down enemy cars to scavenge precious fuel canisters. Hitting stationary obstacles, toxic waste, or enemy fire rapidly drains your health bar and detonates your ride, costing one of your precious continues and forcing you to rely on sharp reflexes to weave through heavy traffic at breakneck speeds.
