Description

Rodland features two fairies called Tam and Rit, whose mission is to rescue their mum who’s been captured and taken to a castle.

There are 40 screens to clear, all full of baddies, who are disposed of by grabbing them with a stick, and flipping them from side to side to inflict damage. The hits needn’t all be inflicted at the same time, as it’s possible to release them to move them out of the way.

RodLand

Overview & History

Released by Jaleco in 1990, *RodLand* made the leap from Japanese arcades to the Nintendo Entertainment System, bringing an adorable yet fiercely challenging single-screen platforming experience. The whimsical storyline casts players as twin fairy heroines, Rita and Tam, whose peaceful home of Fairy Land is disrupted when evil demons kidnap their mother and drag her to the top of the Maboroshi Tower. To save her, the sisters wield magical rods that shoot ropes to ensnare enemies. Unlike standard platformers where you jump on foes, *RodLand* trades vertical leaps for tactical rope-swinging, requiring players to slam captured creatures into the ground repeatedly until they disintegrate into point-scoring fruit and power-ups.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning 30 distinct stages, *RodLand* combines colorful, cute aesthetics with unforgiving arcade difficulty. Rita and Tam can cast a magical rope to grab monsters, swing them overhead like a lasso, and smash them left or right to clear the screen. Smashing multiple enemies at once triggers cascading chain reactions, dropping rare bonus items and extra lives. As players progress, they unlock powerful boots for faster movement, bombs to clear hazards, and temporary umbrella shields. If you find yourself trapped, a special magic button instantly clears the screen of regular foes by turning them into harmless flowers, though it costs a precious life-fraction. Defeating every enemy on a screen opens the portal to the next level, culminating in tense, multi-phase boss battles that test your rope-whipping precision.
