Speed, Endurance, and Determination are just a few of the skills needed in order to become a warrior of the shadows.

Ever wondered what it takes to become a Ninja? Well, now is the chance. Sprint, Dodge, Climb, throw Shurikens, and exhibit Reflexes that rival the wind. Every ounce of spirit will need to be utilized in order to successfully complete each intense skill test. Brave the turbulent trials alone, or find another player who wishes to the walk the path. This is a true test for those who believe they have what it takes. Upon completing the trials, the player with the most skill points will be rewarded with the honorary title of “Ninja”.

Overview & History

Released for the Famicom in Japan by Hudson Soft in 1985 before finding its way to western audiences through various unlicensed and localized iterations, Ninja (often associated with Hudson's classic Ninja Boy or Getsu Fūma Den-adjacent aesthetics of early 8th-gen platforming) is a fascinating snapshot of early NES-era design. Unlike the slower, more deliberate pacing of later ninja titles like Ninja Gaiden, this title leans heavily into relentless, single-screen arcade action where timing and spatial awareness dictate survival.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players step into the tabi boots of a nameless shinobi tasked with infiltrating heavily guarded feudal fortresses to rescue a captured princess. The game eschews sprawling exploratory maps in favor of compact, trap-laden stages filled with rival samurai, soaring kunai-throwing assassins, and deadly pitfalls. The protagonist relies primarily on a dual-attack system: a close-quarters katana slash for melee range and a limited supply of shuriken projectiles for ranged engagement. Power-ups scattered across the platforms grant temporary invincibility, speed boosts, or upgraded blade sweeps. Every level demands precise platforming mastery as moving platforms, collapsing floors, and stealthy snipers punish hesitation.
