Description

TwinBee is a vertical scrolling shooter. The players control cartoon-like spacecrafts with anthropomorphic arms, player one being TwinBee and player two being WinBee. The spacecrafts can be moved in all 8 directions, with one button for regular shooting flying enemies and one button for dropping ground bombs.

In the two-player mode, TwinBee (cyan craft) and WinBee (red craft) have the same speed and they can join “hand-to-hand” and fire a super blast. Also in two player mode, if one craft is hit by the other from behind, it will fire four multi-directional shots.

TwinBee

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1985 for Japanese arcades before its iconic 1986 port to the Family Computer (Famicom) and eventual North American NES localization, *TwinBee* is a vibrant, whimsical pioneer of the vertical-scrolling cute 'em up (cute-em-up) genre. Departing from the gritty, sci-fi military tropes of contemporary shooters like *Gradius*, *TwinBee* places players in a surreal, pastel-colored pastel realm where anthropomorphic aircraft defend a fantasy world from an invading alien army of evil food and kitchen appliances led by the nefarious Spice King. The game is historically significant not only for introducing charming, anime-inspired aesthetic tropes to the shmup genre, but also for its inventive cooperative multiplayer mode, which allowed two players to physically dock their ships together to unleash devastating combined laser attacks.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop revolves around navigating your sentient ship vertically through candy-colored clouds, surreal islands, and floating castles while collecting vital power-ups. Unlike traditional shooters where weapon drops lie on the ground, *TwinBee* ties its primary upgrade system to the sky: players must relentlessly shoot floating, smiling clouds to dislodge oversized bells. As you continuously bombard these bells, they cycle through five distinct colors, each granting different abilities when collected. A yellow bell awards standard bonus points, a white bell upgrades your single shot into a powerful multi-way spread gun, a blue bell grants a speed boost, a flashing green bell creates localized shadow clones of your ship, and a rare red-and-white striped bell equips your craft with a protective forcefield barrier. Compounding this risk-reward mechanic is vulnerability—if you shoot a bell too many times, it transforms into an angry bee enemy. Furthermore, sustaining damage causes your ship's robotic arms to detach helplessly into the scroll path; players must maneuver their crippled ship over the floating ambulance vehicle that appears to retrieve their lost limbs and restore full dual-firing capabilities.
