Description

You control Mappy, a police-mouse whose job is to collect valuables (consumer electronics) from a cat’s house. You are being pursued by a gang of five pink cats. Doors are your only defense against the cats. You get from floor to floor by jumping on one of the trampolines.

Points are earned by recovering stolen goods. Other ways of earning points are bouncing on a trampoline, putting cats in the microwave, striking a cat with a door, striking cats with a bell, retrieving a treasure from the Boss cat Goro or dropping cats through a hole in the floor.

Mappy

Overview & History

Developed and published by Namco, Mappy bounced onto the Japanese arcade scene in 1983 before making its triumphant, highly anticipated debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom in Japan) in 1984. As one of Namco's early technical triumphs utilizing arcade hardware adaptations, the game casts players as a heroic, badge-wearing police mouse named Mappy. His noble mission is to infiltrate the sprawling island mansion of the notorious feline thief syndicate known as the Meowkies (led by the boss Goro) to recover priceless stolen loot. Unlike standard platformers of the era, Mappy eschews traditional vertical jumping for a physics-driven trampoline mechanic, creating a frantic, high-wire act of feline evasion and treasure plundering across multi-tiered hallways.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around navigating six scrolling floors connected by bouncy trampolines, which wear out and break if bounced upon too many times consecutively without touching solid ground. Mappy must collect various stolen items—such as radios, televisions, paintings, and gold—while avoiding pursuing Meowkies and Goro. To even the odds, Mappy can open and close flashing doors to unleash microwave stun waves that sweep across the hallway, neutralizing enemies in their path. Additionally, players can detach hanging bell traps to crush pursuing felines for massive bonus points. Each level culminates in a high-speed bonus round where Mappy must bounce through a balloon-filled stage to pop them all before time expires.
