Full of hate for the Wolves, Mama bravely seeks out the Wolves’ Lair to rescue her Pooyans. Will she succeed in overcoming the Wolves and bringing her Pooyans back home?

Pooyan

Overview & History

Developed and published by Konami, Pooyan made its arcade debut in 1982 before finding a beloved second life on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985. The game blends a whimsical, fable-like storyline with surprisingly strategic, high-tension action. Players control Mama Pig, whose forest home has been invaded by a relentless pack of balloons-clutching wolves determined to kidnap her adorable piglets. Across alternating stages of ascending and descending vertical gameplay, Mama Pig must use her trusty meat-laden bow and arrow to pop the balloons and send the predatory invaders plummeting to the ground below. It stands out in the NES library for its charming visual aesthetic, catchy loop-based soundtrack, and a distinct lack of traditional platforming tropes in favor of fixed-screen shooter mechanics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Pooyan is divided into two distinct gameplay phases that repeat in increasing difficulty. In the first phase, Mama Pig rides an elevator up and down a cliffside, shooting arrows horizontally at wolves floating down via balloons. Some wolves carry umbrellas to deflect arrows, requiring players to time their shots or use chunks of meat to knock them off balance. The second phase reverses the dynamic: wolves scale the cliff walls while Mama Pig stands at the top, rolling large stones down a trough to crush multiple enemies in a single bowling-style strike. Scoring relies heavily on chaining balloon-pops before the wolves safely reach the ground or construct a bridge. Bonus fruit items periodically appear, offering massive score multipliers if collected by dropping the elevator at precisely the right moment.
